September 15, 2011 – Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino, who created a foundation with his wife, Melissa, to help children in Philadelphia and his native Hawaii, has been named the 20th winner of the Branch Rickey Award.
The award was announced Thursday at a luncheon of the Rotary Club of Denver, which established the award in 1991 to honor individuals in baseball for their contributions and their effectiveness as role models for young people, as well as living up to Rotary International’s motto: “Service Above Self.” Each Major League team nominates one player or member of its organization for the national award.
Victorino was chosen by a selection committee of sports media, past award winners, baseball executives and Rotary district governors.
